HIGH TEMPERATURE PAINTS AND COATINGS

BLACK VELVET, FACTORY MANIFOLD GRAY, and POR-20 BRILLIANT ALUMINUM are very high heat-resistant coatings designed for use on steel subject to elevated temperatures.  FACTORY MANIFOLD GRAY, and POR-20 will withstand temperatures up to 1400oF, while BLACK VELVET will withstand temperatures up to 1200oF.   When subjected to high heat concentrations, FACTORY MANIFOLD GRAY will darken in color (as will cast-iron).  Though they will dry to the touch in four (4) hours and may be handled, these coatings will not arrive at full cure until they have been exposed to heat concentrations of at least 300oF.

Surface preparation

Surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, and free from oil, grease and any other coating, which cannot resist high temperatures (paints, varnishes, lacquers, metal prep coatings, etc.). Sandblasted surfaces are ideal, as are wire brushed or sanded or filed surfaces.  Stainless steel surfaces should be given a sweep-blast, or otherwise be mechanically abraded to create a surface profile, which will give improved bonding.  Surgical-type gloves should be worn for handling to keep natural body oils off the prepared surface.

Application

Sir thoroughly before use and occasionally during application.  DO NOT SHAKE.  Keep away from heat, sparks flame.  Use only in well-ventilated areas.  Avoid breathing vapors or spray mist and contact with eyes and skin.  After proper surface preparation, apply by brush, roller or spray.  Reduce if necessary, up to 1 part POR-15 SOLVENT to 8 parts POR-20.  FOR BEST RESULTS: Two thin covering coats are recommended.  Any sagging or running indicates that application is too heavy.  Allow paint to set for several hours on the surface before temperature is raised.  When applying two coats, allow the first coat to air dry 24 hours at 75oF before recoating.  Alternately, the second coat may be applied after the first coat has been subjected to a surface temperature of 400oF and then allowed to cool down.

Thinning

For brush or spray, use only POR-15 SOLVENT.   Lacquer thinner may be used for cleanup, as may other aromatic solvents.  DRY TIME:  At 75oF dry time is 4 hours to touch.  Recoat maybe done after a minimum of 24 hours.  Attains full hardness only after heat exposure above 300oF.
