If the metal you wish to Color Chrome is dirty or dulled with contamination , it must first be scrubbed and cleaned with a mixture of 1 part Marine Clean to 3 parts warm water, followed by a clear water rinse and dry. You must wear protective gloves throughout the process from now on to avoid leaving fingerprints on your metal. Use a hair dryer to speed dry time, preferably, not a cloth that will leave lint. If your metal is clean, wipe it down with Color Chrome Thinner using a clean rag instead of the Marine Clean wash. Wipe metal with solvent until rag is clean, then let dry. Next, use Artisan Metal Polish to achieve a brilliant shine and remove oxides that might still be present. This is especially important when coating aluminum and other alloys. Next, spray on AP 120 and scrub metal with sponge-scrubber provided, which will insure excellent and even adhesion of your Glisten PC base coat Follow the simple on the AP 120 bottle (especially about leaving it on for only 2 minutes) if you are coating polished aluminum , because leaving it on longer might darken the aluminum slightly. Rinse off the AP 120 thoroughly with warm water and allow to dry without wiping to avoid contamination. Again, a hair dryer with hasten the step. Now that your metal is ready for spraying, protect it from dust by covering it suitably with a clean cover. NO FURTHER CHEMICALS SHOULD BE USED BEFORE SPRAYING except possibly a final tack cloth lightly applied. Spraying Color Chrome / Equipment. Your spraying
area should be dust-free and clean with the appropriate equipment in place. The
best equipment for this use is a gravity feed detailing or touchup spray gun.
Our POR-15 Mini-gun is ideal for this work, but if your are comfortable
with your present equipment, use it by all means. Use pressure of 20-30 psi as a
guide, but your own experience will quickly lead you to the proper adjustment. A
POR-15 Moisture and Oils disposable filter should always be used when
spraying Color Chrome because trace oils or moisture through your spray
gun can ruin your job.
Spraying Procedures: Although Color Chrome may be sprayed directly onto glossy metal surfaces, we recommend the following procedure to obtain the most brilliant colors possible with the greatest depth and hardness. Step 1: Spray one medium coat of Glisten PC (the clear coat) onto the prepared metal surface and let dry for at least 1 hour. Note: We recommend you wait 3-4 days before proceeding to step 2, rather than 1 hour, because if you make a mistake with the Color Chrome application that follows, you can simply wipe it away with Color Chrome Thinner and do step 2 again; as the underlying Glisten PC coating will have fully cured and cannot be removed with thinner. Step 2: Spray 2 wet coats of Color Chrome allowing 15 minute intervals between coats. Step 3: Spray a final Glisten PC medium coat and let dry for 24 hours. Important Note: Though your finish may be dry to the touch in an hour or two, it will not be fully cured and consequently could be easily damaged, even accidentally with your fingernail. Allow 96 hours for a full cure, but after 72 hours you may begin to handle it gently with care. Note: It is vital that you cover your freshly sprayed piece after spraying to keep dust from the surface. You should plan in advance how to do this. Clean plastic sheeting is good for this job. CLEANING YOUR SPRAY GUN: Spraying solvent through your gun after use may not work perfectly after spraying Glisten PC, as tiny bits of Glisten residue may remain to ruin your next spray application. To avoid problems, take your gun apart and brush away any residue that may remain. Avoiding Problems with Glisten PC / Application and spraying tips Some surfaces may be quite porous, like cast alloy wheels, general castings, and old metal surfaces. Sometimes these surface might contaminate your Glisten PC coating due to contaminates in the porosity of the casting and craters or fisheyes might form. There is little you can do to stop this, but the good news is that it will only take you a little more to time to correct this problem and finish your job properly. If this happens, let the Glisten PC cure completely (3 to 4 days), then wet and dry sand the contaminated areas with 600 grit or compound, then also sand the rest of the Glisten PC-coated surface. Be careful to avoid cutting through the Glisten PC. Treat again with AP 120, wash with water and air-dry again. Now apply another coat of Glisten PC as before. This is important because if you don’t seal the porosity, the Color Chrome that follows will seep into the porosity of your metal and you will have clear spots (or color voids) appearing after you apply the Color Chrome. You can repeat the above procedure until the surface is covered with Glisten PC with no contamination marks. If your first coat of Glisten PC produced any runs or dust marks, wait till it dries, then use fine or medium compounds or 1200 grit wet and dry paper to remove them. Treat with AP 120, wash with water, and try again. You can apply another coat of Glisten PC, but it isn’t necessary if fine compounds have been used. NOTE: Because of the nature of Color Chrome, only heavy runs or contamination will be noticed. Humidity Control when spraying Glisten PC and Color Chrome. Humidity should be 40% or lower when spraying Glisten PC because higher humidity may cause it to set up too quickly before it has a chance to flow out evenly, thus resulting in a wavy appearance. This is especially true in high-humidity southern climates in the summertime. Whenever possible, spray in a humidity-controlled (air-conditioned) environment. Applying Color Chrome to polished alloy wheelsNearly all alloy wheels are sprayed with a protective coating at the factory, which. over time becomes scratched and marred and eventually comes loose in different places. This coating can be relatively soft and susceptible to damage over time. You have a choice of whether to apply Color Chrome over the coating, or to remove the coating and apply Color Chrome to the alloy wheels. If you decide that your factory clear coat is in acceptably good condition to work with, use a medium compound to dull the surface slightly, then apply AP 120 followed by the spraying procedure previously described. If you decide to remove the factory clear coat, you may purchase a quart of our POR-STRIP stripper with spray nozzle for only $5.00 to do the job. After stripping off the clear coat, wash wheels with warm water, dry them and polish them, followed by AP 120, and then the spraying procedures. SUMMARY OF PROCEDURES IN APPLYING COLOR CHROME 1. Metal Preparation: a. Clean with Marine Clean if dirty 2. Spraying Procedures
a.
First coat: Glisten PC (basecoat) directly on metal surface WARNINGS: FLAMMABLE MATERIAL AND SOLVENTS. ALWAYS, WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES WHEN TOUCHING METAL TO BE COLOR CHROMED. OBSERVE LOCAL ORDINANCES WHENEVER SPRAY PAINTING. AIR-SUPPLIED RESPIRATORS AND PROPER EXHAUST FANS SHOULD ALWAYS BE USED WHEN SPRAYING SOLVENT-BASED MATERIALS. NEVER AIM SPRAY GUNS AT PEOPLE OR ANIMALS. NEVER SPRAY NEAR OPEN FLAME HEATERS OR OTHER DEVICES WHICH COULD IGNITE. SOLVENTS AND THINNERS SHOULD ALWAYS BE SECURELY CAPPED.
